Energy bills often put more stress on your monthly budget than most expenses. Unlike your monthly rent bill, your utilities vary. Try offsetting the shock of unknowable fees by saving money in other areas of your life, starting with some of these money-saving appliances.
Coffee Pots
Unless you’ve managed to escape caffeine culture, it’s likely that you drink coffee on a daily basis. The average cup of coffee goes for an astounding $4 per cup, however. Even without tipping, your monthly coffee expenses can add up to over $100.
Instead of buying from Starbucks every day, consider purchasing a coffee pot of your own. A decent model costs between $50 and $80, and a pound of ground coffee will set you back a mere $10. In the category of appliances that pay for themselves, the coffee pot stands alone.
Alternatively, if you are exclusively a tea drinker, purchase an electric kettle. Electric kettles use less energy than a stove top, and they start at around $15.
Conventional Oven
If you can avoid using your oven, do. It burns through energy at an incredibly fast rate, so if you use your built-in on a daily basis, you will definitely notice a difference at the end of your utility period. A conventional oven uses significantly less energy and can cook a wide variety of meals, albeit on a smaller scale.
Unless you’re roasting a chicken, baking an entire pizza, or otherwise making a large, extravagant meal, a conventional oven will fill this niche just fine.
Lamps
Overhead lights provide the most coverage, but they also use a large amount of energy. Instead of keeping your overhead on during the night, use a strategically-placed lamp or two. Install compact fluorescent light bulbs for bonus points. Both your home and your energy bill will be efficient and inviting.
