The spirit of Stansbury Park manifests itself in its strong commitment to civil pride. Several community organizations exist on a voluntary basis, including their leadership and membership. Community groups are open to all residents. These include the Community Association, Neighborhood Watch, Improvement District Organization, Community Service Agency and CERT.
Of these organizations, the Stansbury Park Community Association grants approval for all remodeling and building plans within the city. (Final approval comes from the Tooele County Engineering Department.) This civic organization is extremely active within the city, as it organizes a host of activities for every member of the family. Children are treated to an Easter egg hunt, while everyone is invited to partake of garden classes, outdoor markets and enjoy a fireworks extravaganza mounted every year on the Fourth of July.
The Stansbury Service Agency administers all of the parks in this district. It is manned by a board of volunteers, chosen and elected by the residents in the area. The park system includes parks, picnic areas, golf courses, playgrounds, lakes and athletic fields.
Woodland Park was once heavily wooded and the site of several horse stables. It currently contains basketball courts and playground equipment for children.
Benson Grist Mill was a water-powered mill, in use during the 1800’s. Formerly used to grind wheat, Benson Grist Mill has now been restored for its historical value and includes an adjacent recreation park.
Stansbury Lake is a manmade body of water, located just southwest of Mill Pond. It contains Captain’s Island, built from an peninsula which extends into the water. There are close to 150 homes on the shores of the lake, including almost 200 houses built on Captain’s Island itself.
Only non-motor powered boats are allowed on Captain’s Lake, although electric motor boats are now allowed at certain times. The lake is primarily used for quiet boating, fishing and swimming. Fish found in the lake include both yellow perch, grass carp, bluegill, as well as both smallmouth and largemouth bass.
Most notably, there is an eighteen hole golf course than runs through the center of town. This golf course contains 14 lakes and 16 holes that include water hazards. This par three hole course is publically owned and open to all. It is also open during the winter, making it the only golf course open during the winter months within the entire Salt Lake City region. There is additionally a clubhouse for activities, food services, a driving range and a pro shop open to the public.
The Harmon’s Observation Complex is located adjacent to Skateboard Park. The observatory is operated by the Salt Lake Astronomical Society. It contains what is said to be “the world’s largest amateur-built reflector telescope.”
